What to Wear for a Maternity Photoshoot

What to Wear for a Maternity Photoshoot: A Complete Guide for Expecting Moms

One of the most common questions I hear from expecting mothers is:

“What should I wear for my maternity photoshoot?”

It’s completely normal to feel unsure. Between planning for a new baby, preparing your home, attending appointments, and navigating all the changes that come with pregnancy, figuring out what to wear for photos may feel like one more thing on an already long list.

The good news is that you don’t need to stress about it.

Whether you’re planning a studio maternity session or an outdoor maternity photoshoot in San Diego, choosing the right outfit is often much easier than most moms expect.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through what photographs beautifully, what helps create timeless portraits, and how we can work together to make sure you feel confident and comfortable throughout your session. Learn more about our maternity photoshoot sessions.

The Most Important Rule: Wear Something That Makes You Feel Beautiful

Before discussing colors, dresses, or accessories, let’s start with the most important factor.

Confidence.

The most beautiful maternity portraits happen when a mother feels comfortable, relaxed, and confident in what she’s wearing.

Pregnancy is an incredible season of life, but it can also bring new insecurities. Many women tell me they feel nervous about being photographed while pregnant. That’s completely normal.

The right outfit helps you stop worrying about how you look and allows you to focus on enjoying the experience.

When you feel beautiful, it shows in every photograph.

You Don’t Need to Buy a New Dress

Many expecting mothers assume they’ll need to spend money shopping for a special maternity gown before their session.

In reality, most of my clients don’t purchase anything at all.

Over the years, I’ve built a client wardrobe featuring more than 50 maternity gowns and dresses specifically selected for professional photography. These pieces are designed to photograph beautifully while flattering a wide variety of body types and styles.

Many women arrive worried about finding the perfect dress only to discover they already have plenty of beautiful options available.

During your consultation, we’ll discuss the overall style you’re hoping to create and choose pieces that fit your vision.

My goal is to make the process as easy and stress-free as possible.

Why Dresses Work So Well for Maternity Photography

Long, flowing gowns remain one of the most popular choices for maternity photography.

They naturally highlight your baby bump while creating elegant movement and timeless portraits.

Many mothers love dresses because they:

  • Emphasize the shape of pregnancy
  • Create a soft and feminine look
  • Photograph beautifully in both studio and outdoor settings
  • Allow comfortable movement
  • Work well for both classic and fine art maternity portraits

Fitted dresses can be equally beautiful, creating a modern and sophisticated look that showcases your growing belly.

There is no single right choice. The best outfit is the one that reflects your personality and makes you feel confident.

Choosing Colors That Photograph Beautifully

Color plays a major role in the overall look and feel of your portraits.

Neutral and soft tones tend to photograph exceptionally well because they keep the focus on you rather than the clothing itself.

Popular maternity photography colors include:

  • Cream
  • Ivory
  • Beige
  • Soft gray
  • Blush pink
  • Dusty blue
  • Sage green
  • Warm earth tones

These colors create timeless images that continue to look beautiful for years to come.

While bright colors certainly have their place, softer tones often create a more elegant and enduring style.

Simple Is Usually Better

When selecting clothing, simplicity often produces the strongest images.

Large logos, busy graphics, and bold patterns can draw attention away from the emotion and connection within the photograph.

Solid colors generally photograph best.

Subtle textures such as lace, chiffon, velvet, knit fabrics, or delicate embroidery can add visual interest without becoming distracting.

The goal is always to keep the focus on your family and the story you’re telling. And we can also do fine art maternity photography.

Consider the Location of Your Session

Your clothing should complement the environment around you.

For beach maternity photography in San Diego, flowing fabrics and lighter colors often pair beautifully with the soft tones of the ocean, sand, and sky.

For studio maternity portraits, elegant gowns and more dramatic styling can create a refined fine art look.

For outdoor locations with greenery, cliffs, or open landscapes, earth tones and natural fabrics often work wonderfully.

When wardrobe and location work together, the final images feel cohesive and intentional.

Dad’s Clothing Matters Too

While mom is naturally the star of the session, dad’s clothing plays an important role as well.

Simple, well-fitted clothing almost always photographs best.

Some great options include:

  • Button-up shirts
  • Sweaters
  • Neutral-colored polos
  • Dress shirts
  • Casual jackets

This is also a great opportunity to dress up a little.

A favorite watch, meaningful piece of jewelry, or a stylish hat can add personality while maintaining a polished appearance.

The goal isn’t to look overly formal. It’s simply to look intentional and coordinated.

Coordinating the Family

If your partner or older children will be participating, coordination works better than matching.

Gone are the days of everyone wearing identical outfits.

Instead, choose colors that complement one another.

Examples include:

  • Cream and tan
  • Beige and navy
  • Soft gray and white
  • Earth tones and neutrals

This approach creates a polished look while allowing everyone to maintain their individual style.

Including Older Siblings

Older brothers and sisters often add wonderful emotion and connection to maternity portraits.

Simple, comfortable clothing usually photographs best for children.

Neutral colors help create a timeless look and keep the focus on family relationships rather than clothing choices.

The most meaningful photographs are often the candid moments between siblings and their soon-to-arrive baby brother or sister.

Personal and Cultural Touches Make Photos More Meaningful

Some of the most memorable maternity portraits include meaningful items that tell your family’s story.

Many families choose to bring:

  • Sonogram photographs
  • Baby shoes
  • Family heirlooms
  • Cultural clothing
  • Traditional jewelry
  • Handmade blankets
  • Meaningful gifts for the baby

These personal details help create images that feel uniquely yours.

If there’s something special you’d like to include, we can absolutely discuss it during your consultation.

Accessories Can Elevate Your Portraits

Accessories can add a beautiful finishing touch when used thoughtfully.

In addition to the client wardrobe, I also have a small collection of accessories available for certain looks.

Depending on the style we’re creating, we may incorporate:

  • Elegant jewelry
  • Fine art fabrics
  • Decorative styling pieces
  • Crowns for select artistic portraits

These details are always used intentionally to enhance the image while keeping the focus on you and your growing family.

Professional Hair and Makeup Can Make a Big Difference

Many mothers choose to have professional hair and makeup done before their session.

Not because it’s required, but because it helps them feel confident and relaxed.

Professional makeup is designed to photograph beautifully while still looking natural in person.

When you feel prepared and confident, it often shows in every image.

Consider Bringing Multiple Looks

If your session allows for wardrobe changes, consider bringing more than one option.

Many maternity sessions include:

  • A casual look
  • A flowing gown
  • A more formal or artistic outfit

Having multiple looks adds variety to your final gallery and allows us to create a wider range of portraits.

What Should You Avoid?

There are no strict rules, but a few things can occasionally become distracting in photographs.

Consider avoiding:

  • Large logos
  • Neon colors
  • Extremely busy patterns
  • Wrinkled clothing
  • Ill-fitting garments
  • Athletic clothing not intended for portraits

Simple, timeless choices generally create photographs you’ll continue to love for decades.

You don’t need to have everything figured out before reaching out.

That’s part of what I’m here to help with.

My goal is to make the entire experience simple, enjoyable, and stress-free so you can focus on celebrating this incredible chapter of your family’s story and creating artwork your family will treasure for years to come.
