When Should You Schedule Your Maternity Photos?

When Should You Schedule Your Maternity Photos?

One of the most common questions I receive as a maternity photographer is, “When should I schedule my maternity photos?” The answer depends on a few factors, but for most mothers, the ideal time for a maternity session is between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy.

During this stage, your baby bump is beautifully visible, but you are usually still comfortable enough to move, pose, and enjoy the experience. Every pregnancy is unique, however, so understanding the timing can help you create the best possible maternity portraits. See what included in our maternity sessions on the maternity page.

Why Timing Matters

Maternity photography is about celebrating a remarkable chapter in your life. The goal is to capture the beauty, anticipation, and emotion of pregnancy while ensuring you feel comfortable throughout your session.

If photographs are taken too early, your bump may not be as prominent as you’d like. If they’re taken too late, you may feel more fatigued, swollen, or uncomfortable during the session. Finding the right balance helps create a relaxed experience and beautiful images you’ll treasure for years.

The Ideal Window: 28–34 Weeks

For most mothers, the sweet spot for maternity photography is between 28 and 34 weeks.

By this point:

  • Your baby bump is typically well-defined.
  • Most mothers still have good mobility and energy.
  • Dresses fit beautifully and highlight the shape of the belly.
  • There’s enough flexibility in case the baby decides to arrive early.

This timeframe tends to provide the best combination of comfort and a beautifully developed pregnancy silhouette.

First-Time Mothers vs. Experienced Mothers

Not all pregnancies develop at the same pace.

First-Time Mothers

First-time mothers often carry a bit smaller and may not show as early. Many first-time moms find that scheduling closer to 30–34 weeks creates the look they want in their photographs.

Second or Third Pregnancy

Mothers who have been pregnant before often begin showing earlier. In these cases, sessions around 28–32 weeks can be ideal because the baby bump is already beautifully visible.

Twin Pregnancies and High-Risk Pregnancies

If you’re expecting twins or have a high-risk pregnancy, I generally recommend scheduling earlier.

Twin pregnancies often result in larger bumps sooner, and comfort levels can change more quickly as the pregnancy progresses. Many twin maternity sessions are photographed between 26 and 30 weeks.

If your doctor has discussed the possibility of an early delivery or special precautions, it’s always best to schedule your session earlier rather than later.

Studio or Outdoor Maternity Photos?

The location can also influence timing.

Studio Maternity Sessions

Studio sessions offer complete control over lighting, temperature, and privacy. Because the environment is comfortable, many mothers feel confident scheduling later in the recommended window.

Outdoor Maternity Sessions

Beach, sunset, and outdoor maternity sessions often involve more walking and movement. Scheduling before the final weeks of pregnancy can help ensure you’re comfortable throughout the experience.

As a San Diego maternity photographer, I often photograph maternity sessions at the beach, parks, and scenic outdoor locations where the natural light creates timeless portraits.

When Should You Book Your Session?

While the session itself may take place around 28–34 weeks, I recommend booking much earlier.

Many photographers only accept a limited number of maternity clients each month, especially during busy seasons.

A good rule of thumb is to reach out during your second trimester, around 16–24 weeks, to secure your preferred date.

Booking early also gives you time to:

  • Plan wardrobe options.
  • Schedule professional hair and makeup.
  • Coordinate family participation.
  • Reserve your desired location.
  • Discuss artwork and print options.

Including Your Partner and Children

Maternity photography isn’t just about documenting a baby bump. It’s also about celebrating the family that’s growing.

Many mothers choose to include:

  • Their spouse or partner.
  • Older children.
  • Family pets.
  • Meaningful heirlooms or baby items.

Planning these details ahead of time helps create a more meaningful and personal session experience.

What If You’re Already Past 34 Weeks?

Don’t worry.

Beautiful maternity portraits can still be created later in pregnancy. Every situation is different, and I’ve photographed many mothers who scheduled their session later than expected.

The most important thing is documenting this special chapter before it’s gone.

If you’re further along, I recommend reaching out as soon as possible so we can find the best available date.

Preparing for Your Maternity Session

A little preparation goes a long way toward creating beautiful photographs.

Some helpful tips include:

  • Stay hydrated in the days leading up to your session.
  • Get plenty of rest the night before.
  • Choose outfits that make you feel confident.
  • Avoid tight clothing before the session to minimize skin marks.
  • Trust your photographer to guide you through posing.

You don’t need modeling experience to create stunning maternity portraits. Professional guidance and thoughtful posing can help every mother look and feel her best.

Creating Memories That Last

Pregnancy can feel like it lasts forever while you’re living it, but once your baby arrives, those months often seem to pass in the blink of an eye.

Maternity photography preserves a moment that can never be recreated. Years from now, these images become a reminder of the excitement, anticipation, and love that existed before your child entered the world.

If you’re considering maternity photos, the best time to start planning is often sooner than you think.

For most mothers, scheduling your maternity session between 28 and 34 weeks provides the perfect balance of comfort, confidence, and a beautifully developed baby bump—resulting in timeless photographs you’ll cherish for generations.
